Autonomic Control of Maximal Heart Rate

The heart rate is regulated by the autonomic nervous system. The sympathetic branch speeds up the heart through beta-1 adrenergic receptors located on the sinoatrial node. During maximal exercise, your body reaches peak sympathetic stimulation. While training does not increase your absolute maximum heart rate, regular aerobic work enhances cardiac stroke volume. This allows the heart to pump more blood per beat, enabling you to sustain high-power outputs at lower relative heart rates.
