The Physiology of VO2 Max

VO2 Max (maximal oxygen consumption) represents the maximum volume of oxygen your body can transport and utilize during incremental, high-intensity exercise. It is determined by central cardiac factors (stroke volume and cardiac output) and peripheral factors (muscle capillary density and mitochondrial density). A higher VO2 Max indicates a highly efficient cardiovascular system that can supply ample oxygen to working skeletal muscles, delaying onset of blood lactate accumulation.
