Understanding Pace vs Speed

Pace (min/km)

How many minutes it takes to cover 1 km. Lower = faster. Most runners track pace rather than speed. A 5:00 min/km pace is a popular beginner goal.

Speed (km/h)

How many kilometres you cover in an hour. Higher = faster. Average recreational runners run at 8โ€“12 km/h. Elite marathoners average ~20 km/h.

Pacing Strategy: How to Use Race Splits

Calculating your target pace is only the first step. To achieve a personal record (PR), you must execute a sound pacing strategy on race day. Here are the three primary pacing strategies based on splits:

Even Splits

Running every kilometer at exactly the same target pace. This is mathematically the most energy-efficient way to run a race, minimizing metabolic stress and glycogen depletion. Highly recommended for beginners and flat courses.

Negative Splits

Running the second half of the race slightly faster than the first half. This strategy prevents you from starting too fast (which triggers early lactic acid buildup) and allows you to finish strong. Used by elite marathoners to break world records.

Positive Splits

Running the first half of the race faster than the second half. While tempting to "bank time" early on, this almost always leads to premature muscle fatigue and "hitting the wall" in the final kilometers. Use with extreme caution.
