The Autonomic Nervous System and Vagal Tone
Exercise induces high sympathetic activity (releasing epinephrine and norepinephrine) to raise heart rate. When exercise stops, the sympathetic nervous system slows down, and the parasympathetic nervous system immediately reactivates via the vagus nerve (releasing acetylcholine) to slow the heart. This vagal response dictates your heart rate recovery speed. Regular cardiovascular conditioning increases resting parasympathetic tone, allowing the vagal "brake" to engage faster and bring heart rate back to resting levels with high efficiency.
