Body Shape Calculator: Silhouette & Proportions
Analyze your circumference proportions. This calculator evaluates bust, waist, high-hip and hip measurements to identify a classic body-shape category.

The Method Behind Anthropometric Body Shapes
1. Silhouette Proportions
This calculator classifies silhouette from relative circumference differences. It does not measure body fat, visceral fat, metabolic health or medical risk. The result is best used as a descriptive proportion category.
2. Descriptive Classification Heuristics
The category boundaries below are descriptive circumference-proportion heuristics. They compare the absolute differences between the bust, waist and hip to classify silhouettes:
- Hourglass: Bust and hips are roughly equal, with a significantly narrow waist (bust-to-waist and hip-to-waist ratios are large).
- Pear: Hips are significantly larger than the bust, with a defined waist.
- Rectangle: Bust, waist, and hips are relatively close in size, lacking a highly defined waist curve.
- Inverted Triangle: Bust is significantly larger than the hips, showing a broad shoulder/chest structure.
Silhouette Criteria & Characteristics
Descriptive parameters used to identify common silhouette categories:
| Body Shape | Mathematical Rules | Proportion Note | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hourglass | Bust - Hips ≤ 1" and Hips - Bust < 3.6", plus Waist is ≥ 9" smaller than bust or hips. | Bust and hips are relatively balanced with a defined waist. | Not a health-risk category. |
| Pear | Hips - Bust ≥ 3.6", and Waist is ≥ 9" smaller than hips. | Hip measurement is larger than bust measurement. | Not a body-fat measurement. |
| Rectangle | Hips - Bust < 3.6", Bust - Hips < 3.6", and Waist is < 9" smaller than bust or hips. | Bust, waist and hips are relatively closer in size. | Not a metabolic-health assessment. |
| Spoon | Hips - Bust ≥ 2", High Hip is ≥ 2" larger than waist, and Spoon-like shelf curve. | Hips and high hip are prominent relative to waist. | Not a visceral-fat estimate. |
| Inverted Triangle | Bust - Hips ≥ 3.6", and Waist is < 9" smaller than bust. | Bust measurement is larger than hip measurement. | Not a medical diagnosis. |
How the Calculation Works
Asterisks Fit uses measurement-location terminology from apparel measurement standards, then applies its own descriptive circumference-proportion heuristics for the shape labels:
- ISO 8559-1 (Garment Construction): Supports anatomical measurement locations and terminology for garment construction. It does not validate the hourglass, pear, rectangle, spoon or inverted-triangle thresholds used by this calculator.
- Shape Labels: The categories are descriptive circumference-proportion heuristics, not medical, ISO, ASTM or SizeUSA-validated classifications.
