1. Visceral vs. Subcutaneous Fat
WHR compares waist circumference with hip circumference. Higher waist size relative to hip size is associated with central fat distribution in population studies, but WHR cannot distinguish subcutaneous from visceral fat and should not be treated as a direct body-composition measurement.
2. WHO Clinical Standards and Ratios
The World Health Organization (WHO) report describes waist-to-hip thresholds used in population screening:
- Men: A ratio of 0.90 or higher is commonly used as an abdominal-obesity screening threshold.
- Women: A ratio of 0.85 or higher is commonly used as an abdominal-obesity screening threshold.
3. How WHR Complements BMI
BMI does not describe where body size is carried. WHR adds a waist-distribution measure that has been studied alongside BMI in cardiovascular research. Population findings should not be turned into an individual diagnosis.
