1. What is Fat-Free Mass Index (FFMI)?

BMI cannot distinguish between muscle and fat. FFMI uses estimated lean body mass and height, so it can add context for athletes and lifters. The result is only as reliable as the body-fat percentage used in the calculation.

2. Mathematical Formula and Height Normalization

The standard FFMI is calculated using your lean body mass (LBM) and height:

FFMI = Lean Body Mass (kg) / [Height (m)]²

However, since taller individuals have a natural advantage in skeletal size and total muscle potential, researchers introduced the Normalized FFMI. This adjusts the score to a standardized height of 1.8 meters (5'11") using the formula:

Normalized FFMI = FFMI + 6.1 × [1.8 - Height (m)]

3. The Kouri Study and the 25.0 Reference Point

In a 1995 study published in the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine, Kouri et al. analyzed male athletes and reported that the natural athletes in that sample did not exceed a normalized FFMI of about 25. This is a useful historical reference point, not a diagnostic threshold or proof of enhancement.

How the Calculation Works
