How We Calculate Ideal Weight
This calculator uses the BMI (Body Mass Index) method to determine a healthy weight range:
Lower bound: BMI of 18.5 (lower edge of healthy range)
Midpoint: BMI of 21.7 (midpoint of healthy range)
Upper bound: BMI of 24.9 (upper edge of healthy range)
The formula: Weight = BMI × height² (in metres)
For example, at 170 cm: Lower = 18.5 × 1.70² = 53.5 kg, Upper = 24.9 × 1.70² = 71.9 kg
Important Note
The "ideal" weight range is based on BMI, which has limitations — it does not account for muscle mass, age, bone density or body composition.
Some people may have a perfectly healthy body composition while sitting outside this range (e.g., athletes with high muscle mass). Use this as a general reference, not an absolute target.
For a more complete view, combine this with a BMI calculation and body fat estimate.
