Volume Landmarks: The Evidence Base
The MEV–MAV–MRV framework was formalized by Dr. Mike Israetel (RP Strength) based on a synthesis of hypertrophy research. A key meta-analysis by Ralston et al. (2017) found a dose-response relationship between weekly volume and muscle growth, with gains plateauing above approximately 10 sets per muscle per week in less trained individuals and above 15 to 20 sets per week in more trained athletes. Schoenfeld et al.'s (2019) volume landmark research provides the current best evidence for the MAV concept in practical programming.
