1. What is RPE & Reps in Reserve (RIR)?

Originally adapted from Borg\'s cardiovascular exertion scale, the modern RPE scale for resistance training was popularized by elite powerlifting coach Mike Tuchscherer of **Reactive Training Systems (RTS)**. Rather than rating breathing rate or heart rate, this scale is based on **Reps in Reserve (RIR)**. It provides a generally consistent, subjective measurement of how close a lifter is to absolute muscular failure at the end of a set.

2. Understanding the RPE Scale

The standard RPE scale ranges from 5 to 10:

  • RPE 10: Maximal effort. No reps in reserve (0 RIR). You could not have done any more weight or repetitions.
  • RPE 9.5: Extremely close to failure. You could not have done more reps, but could possibly have done slightly more weight.
  • RPE 9: 1 Rep in Reserve (1 RIR). You could have completed exactly one more repetition with clean form.
  • RPE 8.5: 1 to 2 Reps in Reserve. You could definitely have done one more rep, and probably a second.
  • RPE 8: 2 Reps in Reserve (2 RIR). You could have completed exactly two more repetitions.
  • RPE 7: 3 Reps in Reserve (3 RIR). Warm-up speed or speed-strength focus.
  • RPE 6: 4 Reps in Reserve (4 RIR). Light speed-work or heavy warm-up.

3. The Power of Auto-Regulation

Auto-regulation is the practice of adjusting your daily training load based on your immediate biological capacity. Factors like sleep deprivation, life stress, systemic inflammation, and caloric intake cause your actual strength to fluctuate by up to ±10% on any given day. By prescribing training as "3 sets of 5 reps at RPE 8" rather than "3 sets of 5 reps at 80% of 1RM," you ensure that the training stimulus is perfectly matched to your recovery state. This maximizes neuromuscular adaptations while drastically reducing the risk of injury and overreaching.
