The Science of Relative Strength & The Wilks Formula

1. Absolute vs. Relative Strength

In strength sports, comparing absolute numbers (e.g., who lifts the heaviest dumbbell) is fundamentally unfair to lighter athletes. A 60 kg lifter deadlifting 180 kg is performing a far more impressive physiological feat (3x bodyweight) than a 120 kg lifter deadlifting 200 kg (1.6x bodyweight). Relative strength measurements solve this by dividing your One-Rep Max (1RM) by your total body mass, giving an accurate representation of your muscle-tissue force-production efficiency.

2. The Mathematics of the Wilks Coefficient

As a lifter gets heavier, their absolute strength increases, but their relative strength-to-weight ratio naturally decreases. This scaling is governed by the **Square-Cube Law** of physics: as an organism grows in size, its volume (and weight) increases cubically (x³), while its muscle cross-sectional area (which dictates strength) only increases quadratically (x²). To normalize this scaling, Robert Wilks created a sophisticated fifth-order polynomial equation:

Coeff = 500 / (a + bx + cx² + dx³ + ex⁴ + fx⁵)

Where `x` is the body weight of the lifter in kilograms, and the coefficients (`a` through `f`) are gender-specific constants derived from historical powerlifting tournament data. Multiplying a lifter\'s total weight lifted by this coefficient yields their **Wilks Score**, allowing direct comparison between light and heavy athletes.

3. The Five Strength Classifications

Our standards categorize your physical capabilities into five distinct athletic tiers:

  • Untrained: 0 RIR or little exposure to lifting. Has basic mechanical capability.
  • Novice: Stronger than about 20% of the population. Typically has 3 to 9 months of consistent, structured training.
  • Intermediate: Stronger than 50% of lifters. Represents 1 to 2 years of highly consistent progressive overload.
  • Advanced: Stronger than 80% of lifters. Represents several years of dedicated strength-specific blocks and optimal recovery.
  • Elite: Stronger than 95% of lifters. Competitive at national powerlifting meets or elite athletic programs.
