The Supercompensation Theory Behind Deloads

Deloads are rooted in the General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) model, originally described by endocrinologist Hans Selye. When applied to strength training, GAS describes three phases: Alarm (acute fatigue from training stimulus), Resistance (the body adapts and fitness increases), and Exhaustion (if excessive training continues without recovery, performance declines). Strategic deloads interrupt the exhaustion phase before it occurs, allowing supercompensation — the body's tendency to recover to a higher baseline than before the stressor.
