Progressive Overload: The Single Most Important Principle in Strength Training
Progressive overload was formally described in the context of modern exercise science by Thomas DeLorme in 1945, who documented that progressive resistance exercise led to superior strength gains compared to fixed-load exercise in rehabilitation patients. This principle has since been validated in hundreds of randomized controlled trials. The Schoenfeld et al. (2017) meta-analysis found that while total weekly volume is the primary driver of hypertrophy, systematic load progression over time is the primary driver of long-term strength gains.
