Hydrodynamics of Swimming Velocity

Unlike running or land sports, water is roughly 800 times denser than air. Velocity in swimming is defined by the relationship between forward propulsive force and hydrodynamic drag. Drag increases as a square of velocity (Drag ∝ Velocity²). Consequently, minor improvements in body positioning (reducing active drag by aligning hips, elevating the head, and keeping a tight core) yield significantly faster pacing than simply increasing absolute muscular power output.
