Physiology of Interval-Based Recovery
Continuous running triggers high-frequency eccentric muscle loading and core temperature increases, leading to central nervous system (CNS) fatigue. Alternating running with short walks changes the primary muscle recruitment patterns, reducing the eccentric load on the quadriceps and load on the patellar tendon. These micro-recovery periods allow heart rate to drop slightly, reducing cardiovascular drift and keeping lactate accumulation below the threshold level for much longer durations.
