The Mathematics of Relative Strength

Lifting coefficients are designed to neutralize the physiological advantage that larger athletes possess in absolute force production. Because muscle cross-sectional area scales as a squared dimension (2D) while bodyweight scales as a cubic dimension (3D), absolute strength ratios (total/bodyweight) naturally favor lighter lifters. Polynomial formulas like DOTS and Wilks correct this scaling disparity, allowing a 60kg athlete lifting 400kg to compete fairly with a 110kg athlete lifting 700kg.
