3. METs and Thermodynamics

Our calculator utilizes Metabolic Equivalent (MET) coefficients from the **Compendium of Physical Activities** (Ainsworth et al.). One MET represents your resting metabolic rate (approx. 1 kcal/kg/hour). By multiplying the MET value of your specific cycling speed by your body mass and riding duration, the calculator determines gross calorie burn:
