1. Muscle Glycogen: The High-Intensity Fuel

When you perform high-intensity exercise (typically above 65% of your VO₂ Max), your body relies heavily on anaerobic and aerobic glycolysis to synthesize ATP (energy). The primary fuel for this pathway is glucose, which is stored inside skeletal muscle fibers as **muscle glycogen**. If your muscle glycogen stores are depleted due to an insufficient carbohydrate intake, your training intensity will drop, muscle power will decrease, and your rate of perceived exertion (RPE) will rise dramatically. 2. Activity-Based Carbohydrate Requirements

  • Light Activity (health/general fitness): 3 to 5 grams per kg of body weight per day.

3. The Role of the Post-Workout Window

Following intense exercise, muscle cells are highly sensitive to insulin, and a transport protein called GLUT4 is translocated to the cell membrane. This creates a temporary physiological window where the rate of glycogen synthesis is accelerated. Consuming high-glycemic (simple) carbohydrates immediately post-workout, especially when combined with a quality protein source, rapidly triggers glycogen replenishment and initiates muscle tissue recovery.
