How to use the 4-4-4-4 breathing cycle

  1. Sit in a supported position and let your shoulders relax.
  2. Inhale gently for four seconds without trying to fill the lungs completely.
  3. Hold for four seconds, then exhale slowly for four seconds.
  4. Pause for four seconds and repeat for one to three minutes.

Paced breathing can support relaxation, but it should not replace care for persistent anxiety, breathing difficulty or chest symptoms. Stop immediately if the exercise feels uncomfortable.
